Why Do Some Children With Esotropia Need Surgery While Others Only Need Glasses?
2024-05-28
book-chapter1st authorCorrespondingEsotropia, or the inward misalignment of one or both eyes, is a form of strabismus commonly seen in children. Although there are many forms of esotropia, the 2 most common types are accommodative esotropia and nonaccommodative esotropia (Figure 27-1). Congenital or infantile esotropia is a form of nonaccommodative esotropia present in children under the age of 1 year. In this section, I will frequently cite congenital esotropia when referring to nonaccommodative forms of esotropia, although nonaccommodative esotropia can also be acquired at a subsequent time. Accommodative esotropia requires the use of eyeglasses, and nonaccommodative esotropia requires surgery.
