About

Chris Walker is a professor of dance and the founding artistic director of the First Wave program in the Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work creates contemporary dance, theater, and performance artwork rooted in the visual and performance cultures of the African Diaspora, and he works across disciplines including dance, theater, and film/video. Walker has served as a movement director for Lynn Nottage’s Mlima’s Tale and as a choreographer for The Secret Life of Bees, The Musical produced by Atlantic Theatre in NYC. He is the co-artistic director for the #BARS Workshop at The Public Theatre in NYC, a lab series for artists exploring the intersection of contemporary verse and theater, and a senior choreographer with the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica. Additionally, he is the program director for the New Waves Dance & Performance Institute in Trinidad & Tobago. Walker’s concert dance work has been presented internationally across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and he has collaborated on projects such as Jus Luv/Rolling Calf for the Intervention: Indigo project, which was performed in the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. His recent research includes a Romnes Fellowship focused on homophobia in the African Diaspora, and he was named a School of Education Impact 2030 Faculty Fellow in 2020.
