A Trump effect on immigration policy attitudes? Another look
Journal of Public Policy · 2025-11-24
articleOpen access1st authorCorrespondingAbstract Individuals who particularly like or dislike a president or presidential candidate may, through a process of motivated reasoning, personally support or oppose the politician’s policy positions as a consequence. I examine the extent to which attitudes toward Donald Trump shaped public opinion on immigration policy, a case that appears to invite motivated reasoning. I estimate the influence of attitudes about Trump by comparing them directly to views of Barack Obama and trade policy using large reputable national surveys. I find a material, if limited, Trump effect. Trump polarized Americans on immigration considerably. However, the polarization was not along racial or ethnic lines. Moreover, any Trump effect on immigration appears not to have been as large as that he brought to bear on trade. Contrary to some recent work, such an effect also appears to have elevated immigration only marginally in the list of those deemed important.
215 The GOSH clinical insights unit: lessons from a year of data-driven operational decision making

articleOpen accessSenior author42/77 (54.5%) had readily accessible admission and discharge weight for height (WFH).Most patients had an easily accessible admission or discharge weight.73/77 (94.8%) had an admission and discharge Child Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) recorded, with an average improvement of 25 points over the admission. Conclusions Patients admitted to MCU showed an improvement in their weight parameters (WFH) which is the key goal of treatment eating disorders, according to the NICE guidance. (3)Inpatient admission is expensive compared to community options. It is likely that there are a small proportion of patients for whom treatment in the community does not provide sufficient/sustained improvement in weight. The available data was patchy and the next steps in the project will include ways to improve recording of data.
Trump and the Art of Presidential Deal Making
Congress & the Presidency · 2024-04-19 · 1 citations
article1st authorCorrespondingDonald Trump's professional background is unique among presidents. I glean basic principles of negotiation from his professional life, presented largely in his book The Art of the Deal, but also other writing, media interviews, and social media posts. I argue the success of his approach is dependent for the most part upon three factors: the nature of his counterpart, the expected frequency of future deals with this counterpart, and the position of the status quo and reversion points in the negotiation. In the bargaining contexts I present, Trump's approach, I hypothesize, is most likely to bring about success—a deal—in foreign policy and least likely in regular lawmaking. I find some evidence consistent with this. The study illustrates scholars should do more to understand how pre-tenure careers affect presidential behavior.
Work volition and career control in retail workers
Australian Journal of Career Development · 2023-06-23 · 4 citations
articleOpen access1st authorThe Work Volition Scale (WVS) is a brief measure of the perceived capacity to make career decisions despite constraints; however, systematic validation of item responses to the scale is still in its infancy. The present article reports on research conducted to investigate the latent structure of WVS, its invariance across gender, and mean differences in work volition across income in a sample of retail workers. A bifactor structure of the WVS accounted for construct-relevant multidimensionality in scores due to the presence of general and specific volition dimensions. Tests of gender invariance revealed the equivalence of item loadings, thresholds, uniquenesses, and factor means. Support was also found for plausible latent mean differences in general volition across income, with retail workers earning high wages reporting greater volition than those earning low wages. Finally, evidence was obtained for theoretically meaningful relations of the general and specific volition dimensions with career control.
