About

David Caron is a professor of French and Women's & Gender Studies at the University of Michigan. He earned his Ph.D. in French from the University of California, Irvine in 1994. His scholarly work focuses on 20th- and 21st-century French literature and culture, with specific interests in queer and HIV studies, Holocaust studies, and Jewish Studies. Caron's research explores themes such as community and republican universalism, urban space engagement by minoritized groups, representations of collective disasters like AIDS and the Holocaust, masculinity, and concepts of neighborhood and family. He is the author of several books, including 'The Nearness of Others: Searching for Tact and Contact in the Age of HIV,' which examines the cultural and social implications of contact and tact in modern Western culture, especially in relation to HIV/AIDS. His recent research investigates the role of queer films from various countries—France, Portugal, the U.S., Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines—in understanding wonderment, sensuality, and hospitality to strangers. Caron’s work also extends to film and transnational Asian studies, particularly focusing on colonial Indochina and contemporary Chinese migrations. His contributions include critical insights into how cultural representations shape understandings of community, disaster, and social contact.

  • Integrating Art-Based Approaches in Psycho-Oncology Practice: Insights From a Pilot Creative Arts Workshop Designed for Cancer Patients Receiving Psychiatric Care

Journal of Patient Experience · 2025-09-01

    articleOpen access

Living with cancer involves numerous challenges during illness journey, including a high rate of significant distress and an increased risk of psychiatric disorders. Addressing these complex and multidimensional needs requires innovative and patient-centered approaches. Integrative interventions, such as art-based practices, have shown evidence-based benefits in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression in adults with cancer. However, access to such complementary interventions remains limited in routine clinical care. Our team developed and implemented a creative arts workshop specifically designed for cancer patients treated for comorbid psychiatric disorders as a complementary intervention to standard psychiatric care. This article briefly outlines the workshop, as well as some institutional and clinical challenges encountered during implementation. Actionable insights and practical recommendations for institutions interested in adopting similar initiatives are also discussed. By providing an engaging space for emotional expression, the creative arts workshop was well received by participants and contributed positively to their care experience. Future research should focus on its feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness on psychological well-being and quality of life in this vulnerable population.

  • Dissecting Backlash

David Caron and Esme Shirlow discuss the widespread criticism against investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). They argue that these critiques must be disentangled in terms of the actors and substantive concerns. A main conclusion is that the misgivings may not be directed towards the dispute settlement mechanism itself, but rather concern broader worries about globalization.
