About
Juan Carlos Rodríguez (Ph.D., Program in Literature, Duke University, 2007) is an Associate Professor of Spanish at Georgia Tech. He is also co-director of the Atlanta Global Studies Center and co-editor of the collections of essays 'New Documentaries in Latin America' (Palgrave, 2014) and 'Digital Humanities in Latin America' (University Press of Florida, 2020). His research focuses on Latin American documentaries, examining their aesthetics, indigenous media, transnational filmmaking, and their representation of contemporary urban issues such as housing, transportation, water resources, economic development, and social movements. He studies how documentaries serve as audiovisual discourses that open possibilities for examining urban imaginaries, revealing how city dwellers perceive, experience, and transform their cities through visual narratives. Rodríguez has contributed to the field through publications in various academic journals and book chapters, exploring themes related to Latin American media, urban representation, and documentary aesthetics. He has also been actively engaged in community projects, including founding the Georgia Tech Global Media Festival and developing the digital video archive 'Vieques Struggle,' which documents the demilitarization of Vieques, Puerto Rico. His work combines critical theory, digital humanities, and media studies to analyze Latin American urban and cultural issues through documentary film and digital projects.

articleOpen accessBACKGROUND: Antibiotics are used in animal husbandry to control infectious diseases. Different stressors can compromise animal health, leaving piglets vulnerable to pathogens, especially enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), which causes post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD), the major source of mortality and morbidity in swine production. Furthermore, PWD is a recurrent disease for certain farms, suggesting a link between gut microbial composition and animal health. The aim of this study was to identify the intestinal microbiota of pigs on farms with high health status (HHS) and low health status (LHS) to determine the relationships between sanitary status and gut health. Therefore, three pig farms with LHS presenting recurrent problems of PWD and three farms with HHS were selected to characterise the intestinal microbiome of sows and their piglets. 16 S rRNA gene sequencing technology was used to determine the associations of the gut microbiome with health. With the aim of bringing the MinION Nanopore device to the field for its portability and taxonomic resolution, the results obtained with Illumina were compared to those obtained with Nanopore. RESULTS: Overall, the results indicated remarkable differences in intestinal microbial communities between animals from LHS farms and those from HHS farms, suggesting that the microbiomes of LHS animals were enriched with potential pathogenic microorganisms, mainly from the Pseudomonadota phylum, such as the genus Escherichia-Shigella, and their associated related species. Moreover, animals from HHS were enriched with beneficial microorganisms, such as Lactobacillus spp., Christensenellaceae R7 group, Treponema, Acetitomaculum and Oscillospiraceae UCG-005. CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies potential microorganisms that may contribute to health and disease in pig farms with HHS and LHS, suggesting that tracking their occurrence might provide insight into sanitary conditions. Moreover, this research highlights the compatibility between Illumina and Nanopore sequencing platforms, justifying the use of MinION Nanopore device in field applications for in situ studies of PWD. This application has the potential to enhance sustainable economic growth in swine farms by enabling more effective monitoring and management of animal health.

articleOpen access1st authorCorrespondingIntroduction Violent extremism is a complex and urgent issue that affects all sectors of society and necessitates research aimed at preventing and transforming violent behavior. Methods This study presents the findings of a questionnaire comprising 34 items administered to 1,169 teenagers from two secondary schools in Almería and Madrid, Spain, immediately following the conclusion of COVID-19 confinement measures. The primary objective of the study is to analyze teenagers’ perspectives on violent extremism and pro-violent attitudes, along with their association with various factors such as digital consumption, interpersonal relationships, and the socio-demographic circumstances of their families. Data collection involved direct interventions with the students at the participating educational institutions. Results The findings demonstrate that variables such as gender, number of siblings, and religious practice influence violent extremism, whereas nationality does not emerge as a significant factor. Additionally, the study identifies several contributing factors to the prevalence of extremist and pro-violent attitudes, and employs a moderation analysis utilizing the mother’s level of education as a moderator variable. Discussion Based on these results, the study recommends further research to enhance our understanding of the development of violent attitudes and behaviors. Additionally, it suggests implementing family and personal support programs aimed at fostering healthy adolescent development.

Journal of Intelligence · 2022-09-19 · 15 citations
articleOpen accessThe objective of this research was to analyze the mediation of academic engagement and the satisfaction of basic needs between teaching styles and academic confidence amongst teachers during initial training. The research design was observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and non-randomized. In total, 920 university students in initial teacher training participated (61.85% women) (Mage = 24.73; SD = 5.34). The scales of interpersonal teaching styles, the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, academic engagement, and academic confidence were used, and a structural equation analysis with latent variables was carried out. The results highlight the important mediating role played by the satisfaction of basic psychological needs between the autonomous support style and the academic confidence of the trainee teachers. This research also highlights the importance, both for teachers and researchers, of using an autonomous support style, as well as the creation of a context for encouraging the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, to promote academic confidence in initial teacher training programs at university.

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research) · 2021-11-30
