About
Kristi E Gamarel, PhD, EdM, is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Health Behavior & Health Equity at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Her research focuses on LGBTQ+ health, social safety, and health equity, examining how social, structural, and legal conditions influence health and well-being. Her work explores how stigma, discrimination, economic hardship, and violence create barriers to care and safety, particularly affecting transgender communities and LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. Dr. Gamarel aims to identify opportunities within healthcare, community, and policy systems to improve access to affirming services and foster conditions that enable LGBTQ+ individuals to thrive. Her research integrates community-based participatory research principles and dissemination and implementation science to design, test, and scale public health interventions, utilizing qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches, including intervention development, trials, and real-world community evaluations. She has held leadership roles in academia and national research networks, including long-term membership in the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV Interventions and serving on the NIH HIV/AIDS HIBI Study Section. Dr. Gamarel is an Associate Editor for Annals of Behavioral Medicine, chairs the HBHE Doctoral Curriculum Committee, and serves as Training Coordinator for the Population Studies Center Demography T32 program. Her work has been continuously supported by federal grants, and she has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications. Recognized as a Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and a recipient of the NIH Sexual and Gender Minority Research Office Mid-Career Investigator Award, she is deeply committed to mentorship and supporting early-career scholars in community-engaged health equity research.
