book-chapterSenior authorThis wide-ranging discussion, conducted via email but based on an ongoing dialogue that spans two decades, Caroline Levine and Martin Puchner examine how new genres are born, why they emerge, and how they travel from one location to another. Defending genre against its detractors, they also compare genres to forms based on Levine's understanding of the term. Levine and Puchner then apply their conclusions to the challenge of climate change by examining the genres we use to tell the story of human agency and the social forms of organization that transform stories into action.

Incompleteness goes back all the way to the origin of the concept of world literature: for Goethe, the age of world literature was always in the making, always in the process of arriving, but never quite here yet: “the epoch of world literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach”. Goethe, Marx, and Engels show that world literature is open temporally, that it never considers itself complete and therefore is oriented towards the future. Literature’s worldly entanglements include conquest and empire, narratives of collective origin and national destiny, but they also include economic matters. The teaching of world literature has followed suit, with many formerly “Western literature” or “Western masterpieces” courses giving way to world literature.
