About

Ronald Mellor is a Distinguished Research Professor in the UCLA Department of History, specializing in Greek and Roman history, ancient religion, and classical tradition. A native of Brooklyn, he studied Latin and Greek at Regis High School and later pursued classics and philosophy at the University of Louvain in Belgium and Fordham University, earning his A.B. in 1962. He received his doctorate in Classics from Princeton University in 1968. Mellor initially taught in the Classics department at Stanford University before joining UCLA in 1976, where he has taught courses including Western Civilization, World History, and a summer travel study course in Rome. His research centers on ancient religion and Roman historiography, and he has authored numerous books on these topics, including 'Thea Roma: The Goddess Roma in the Greek World,' 'From Augustus to Nero: The First Dynasty of Imperial Rome,' and 'The Annals of Tacitus.' Mellor has held fellowships at prestigious institutions such as University College London, the Australian National University, the American Academy in Rome, and the Princeton Institute of Advanced Studies. He has also served as Chair of the UCLA History Department and was the statewide Principal Investigator of the California History-Social Science Project, which received the American Historical Association Beveridge Award for K-12 teaching. In 2013, he retired from full-time teaching but continues to teach on recall as a Distinguished Research Professor. The Arcadia Foundation established 'The Ronald Mellor Professorship in Ancient History' with a $5 million gift upon his retirement.
